For over nearly twenty years, Joel Mier has been working with organizations on evolving into market-backed companies: by understanding the customer(s) and translating that into goals, strategies, and tactics across the enterprise.
Joel Mier is currently the Vice President of Marketing for a Fortune 200 financial security company in Richmond, Virginia. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Marketing at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) focused on internet marketing.
For the better part of a decade, Mier was Director of Marketing at Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX), the industry altering online entertainment service.
Mier managed several acquisition channels for Netflix which accounted for up to 25% of all of the firm’s customer acquisition as well as was responsible for the firm's Consumer Insights function. For several years, Mier was also responsible for the creation, refinement, and execution of all customer communications. These included lifecycle and retention management, partner marketing, merchandising, and many others.
Before joining Netflix, Mier was Senior Business Analyst with Adobe Systems, makers of industry-leading software Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. Mier was responsible for working with the product groups and ensuring that customer needs and voices were included in the development, planning, and prioritization of product lifecycles.
As a leading analyst with the Gartner Group covering the then-exploding PC market in the 1990’s, Mier was the first to identify the market expanding opportunity for a sub-$1,000 home PC (“What The Home Market Needs Is A Good, Cheap PC”, eWeek, January 15, 1996). Mier was also a daily fixture for several years on San Jose-based NBC affiliate KNTV’s morning news program, “Good Morning San Jose!”, representing the Gartner Group as a high technology and business commentator.
